We love to have some good maple syrup on our pancakes and waffles. The smell is so wonderful and sweet. If you live in New York City, you might even smell it in the air, which is a great step up from the usual smell!

But should you worry if your dog suddenly starts smelling like maple syrup or waffles? The smell itself does not necessarily mean that there is any problem. A lot depends on whether you notice any other changes in your puppy. So let’s see what causes this smell (except for breakfast time).

That fresh maple flavor: Breakfast was delicious and a bit weird for dogs.

    Different foods

Sometimes parts of your dog’s diet may change their smell. Stay’s fresh turkey recipes include fenugreek seeds. We always use healthy, natural ingredients to promote the health and well-being of our dogs. We love these because studies show that fenugreek seeds contain high amounts of fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals that have great health benefits. These include:

    • Balance blood sugar levels
    • Helps cholesterol levels
    • Improves digestion
    • Anti-cancer properties
    • Powerful anti-inflammatory properties
    • Anti-obesity and anti-diabetic properties

In fact, fenugreek seeds are often part of a holistic medical supplement for diabetic dogs to help them achieve healthy blood sugar levels.

Fenugreek seeds, in case you want to know.

The trade-off, if you can even call it, is that sometimes the seeds cause the dog’s breath to smell like maple syrup. If this is the only change you notice, it might not be a problem. It just means better around them!

    Health changes

However, there are signs that your dog may be dealing with health issues‍.

Sometimes it’s not their breathing, but your dog’s fur that smells like maple syrup. This is not related to fenugreek seeds and may be a yeast infection.

If your dog’s breath or urine smells like acetone, sometimes reminiscent of maple syrup, and you see any of these signs, your dog may have canine diabetes:

    • Excessive thirst
    • Increased urination
    • weight loss
    • Increased appetite

If you notice any of these symptoms, see a veterinarian as soon as possible to properly diagnose your dog.

As a pet parent, you know your dog best. If you notice that the only change in your dog’s breathing makes you want to eat breakfast, your dog is probably fine; But if there are other changes, we recommend that you see a veterinarian as soon as possible.
