Can dogs eat soybeans? Perhaps you’ve figured out if you can share treats with your dog while using one of many soy products as a meat substitute for a healthy diet. If humans can eat soybeans, can dogs eat them safely?

There is no short “yes” or “no” answer to whether it is safe for dogs to eat soy. Soy is not technically considered toxic to dogs. However, they are also commonly used in many products that can be harmful to dogs, such as soy sauce and tofu.

As always, you must ask your regular veterinarian before sharing any human food with your beloved canine friend. Here’s what you need to know about soy and dogs.

When can you give soy to a dog?

Soy itself is not toxic to dogs. Some dog-friendly soy products and foods include cooked edamame and some forms of plain tempeh.

When it comes to providing your dog with the nutritional benefits of soy, some of the positives include the amount of vitamins, amino acids, and folate contained in soy.

When is soy bad for dogs?

First, if your dog is allergic or intolerant to soy, avoid providing them with any soy or soy products.

Second, it’s a good idea to keep the amount of any soy you offer to your dog in small amounts. This is because certain soy products, such as tofu, can cause bloating in your dog.

Third, make sure that any soy you provide for your dog is free of any additional ingredients or seasonings added. So if you’re thinking about feeding your dog tempeh, make sure it’s not filled with spices either.

Finally, note the sodium content of any soy you provide for your dog. For example, the high sodium content in soy sauce precludes it as a safe food to serve to your dog.
